Shirley Denton, a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2023, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Pontotoc, MS. She was surrounded by her loving family in her final moments. Shirley was born on February 10, 1940, in Johnson City, Illinois to Odis Herrington and Dovie Galloway Herrington.

Shirley was known for her devout faith and was a faithful churchgoer throughout her life; Sandwich Pentecostal Church, Benton Street Apostolic Church, New Albany Church of God, Mayfield House of God, Soul Harbor, 1st Apostolic Jumper Town,Assembly of God (Guntown), cedar Grove (Tupelo), Richardson Chapel (Guntown)  were her home churches over her life. She found solace and strength in her spiritual beliefs. 

In her free time, Shirley enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. She had a talent for knitting and sewing, creating beautiful handmade garments that she shared with her loved ones. Fishing and camping were also some of her favorite activities, allowing her to connect with the peacefulness of nature. Additionally, she found great joy in playing games on her tablet and reading her cherished Bible. Shirley had an appreciation for the simple pleasures in life and often indulged in watching classic Western movies. Her constant companion and source of unconditional love was her beloved dog, Lacey.
Mrs. Shirley is survived by her son John Denton (Deanna), and her daughters April Marlene Thomas (Larry), Priscilla Rose Lovelace, Mary Elizabeth Denton, Linda Jane Moreno, Nancy Quortilla Floyd (Scotty), and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of many years John Denton by her parents Odis Herrington and Dovie Galloway Herrington, daughters Dovie Ann Jovonavich, and Yvonnie Bolen, granddaughter Amy Melton, and grandson Johnathen Stutts.

Visitation will be held in honor of Shirley Denton's memory on October 31, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Glenfield Funeral Home located at 101 N. Denton Road in New Albany, MS. Another visitation will take place on November 1st from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the same location. Following the second visitation on November 1st, a Celebration of Life service will be held at Glenfield Funeral Home at 1:00 PM. Bro. Charles Durham, Bro. Buddy Marshall and Deston Wammack will be officiating the service. 
Interment will be held at Enterprise Cemetery in Myrtle, MS on November 1st at 2:30 PM.


Pallbearers will be Albert, Gage, Nathan, Destin, Dayton and Arron Matthew. Honorary pallbearers will be Anthony McDonald, Joey Cobb, Larry Thomas, Justin Melton, Nick Walker, Joshua Mcgregory and Jonathan Denton. 


During this time of mourning, may we fondly remember Shirley Denton's life and the love she shared with those around her. Her kind heart, unwavering faith, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed. May she rest in eternal peace.
The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Glenfield Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in honor of Mrs. Shirley Denton.
