Gladis Faye Clements of Hernando, MS passed away peacefully on October 16, 2026 at the age of 99. The second of five children, she was born in Pontotoc County, Mississippi on March 31.1927 to Isaac B. and Clara Mae McLaughlin.
She met James Clements in a revival meeting at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Pontotoc County, MS when she was only 16. She never considered anyone else after that. James served in the Army in WWII, and when he was discharged, they were married on October 12, 1946. They enjoyed 51 wonderful years together until his death on December 5, 1997. They were truly two halves of a whole person ("the two shall become one flesh" Gen.2:24), and she was never really "whole" again after his death. She longed for the day they would be reunited in Heaven. They both knew Jesus Christ as their Savior, so we know there is a great celebration going on there.
She started married life as a stay-at-home wife. She truly made being a homemaker her full-time job. As the children came, James didn't want her to work outside the home until they were of school age. Whatever she worked at, she gave it her all and tried to instill the same work ethic in her children and grandchildren. She kept an immaculate house, cooked 3 meals a day, raised vegetable gardens, starched and ironed all the clothes, and kept her children spotless and shining, as well. Each day started with a big breakfast around the table as a family. When the youngest was old enough to go to kindergarten, James agreed for her to get a part-time job at the Southaven Elementary School cafeteria, because it was only for half a day. She continued there until 1969, when she decided to start babysitting in the home. She continued in this line of work until 2004 at the age of 77. From Southaven to Byhalia, and finally Pontotoc, she became known as MS Faye, Mamaw Faye, or just Mamaw to hundreds of children throughout those 35 years.
She loved her family more than anything and worried about them incessantly. She was a worrier by nature, just like her mother was. We always said her theme song should be "I Won't Have to Worry Anymore", and now, at last, she won't. Faye is survived by her sister and dearest friend, Ruth Hale of Pontotoc, MS, 2 sons, Darrell Clements (Rachel) of Hernando, MS, and Don Clements (Denise, deceased) of Horn lake, MS, and one daughter, Donna Russell (Cecil) of Pontotoc, MS.
She also leaves to cherish her memory 7 grandchildren, Casey Clements of Helena, AR, Brian Clements of Dyersburg, TN, Claire Tucker (Matthew) of Southaven, MS, Jeremy Russell (Ellie) of Portland, OR Aaron Russell (Selena) of Denver, CO, Caleb Russell (Sarah) of Milwaukie, OR, and Erica Russell of Nashville, TN, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Carl, Travis, and Quay McLaughlin, and daughter-in-law, Denise Daniels Clements.
